About Mint Fitness

A Small Gym With a Clear Purpose

Mint is a small boutique Christchurch gym built around a simple idea:

help people stay strong, capable and confident as they get older.

We specialise in Strength After 40, personal training and intelligent, assessment-led programmes for people who want expert guidance without the noise, crowds or intimidation of a large commercial gym.

Some of our members have trained for years.

Others haven’t exercised properly in a long time.

What matters isn’t where you start.

It’s having a sensible plan for where you want to go.

Why Mint Exists

We believe training should help you live more — not take over your life.

Strength matters because life asks things of us.

Carrying groceries. Climbing stairs. Playing golf. Travelling. Getting down to the floor and back up again. Keeping up with family. Staying independent.

The gym is simply where we prepare for those things.

Our job is to help you build the strength, fitness and confidence that carry into everyday life.

That means:

  • Assessment before assumptions.
  • Consistency before intensity.
  • Progress rather than punishment.

And training built around the person standing in front of us.

What Makes Mint Different?

STRENGTH
AFTER 40

Strength After 40
Our primary focus is helping adults build and maintain the strength, fitness and movement that become increasingly important as we age.

SMALL ON
PURPOSE

Small on Purpose
Mint isn’t trying to be the biggest gym in Christchurch.
A smaller environment means less noise, fewer crowds and more personal attention.

ASSESSMENT-
LED

We Assess Before We Train
We start by understanding your goals, training history, movement, strength and fitness before deciding what your training should look like.

COACHING + INDEPENDENCE

Support When You Need It
Work one-to-one with a trainer, train independently with 24/7 member access, or combine the two as your confidence and needs change.

Professional enough to know what we’re doing. Small enough to notice you.

Our Story

Mint has been part of the Christchurch fitness community for nearly two decades.

In October 2013, Mint moved from Peterborough Street to its current home in Birmingham Drive.

A lot has changed since then — equipment, technology, training methods and what we understand about healthy ageing.

What hasn’t changed is the value of knowing the person you’re training.

Over time, Mint has increasingly focused on the things that matter most to our members: strength, cardiovascular fitness, mobility, recovery, confidence and the ability to keep doing more of what they enjoy.

Today, that thinking sits under one clear idea:

Strength After 40.
We’re not trying to turn people into athletes.
We’re helping people build bodies that remain useful for life.

Meet the People Behind Mint

Mint is deliberately small, and so is our team.
That means you’ll quickly get to know the people who coach here — and they’ll get to know you.

MIKE MCCAULEY

Owner & Master Trainer

Mike has worked in the fitness industry for around 30 years and has owned Mint for approximately 18 years.

His coaching focuses on strength, longevity and helping everyday people become more capable and confident in their bodies.

Much of his work involves adapting training to suit the person in front of him — whether they’re new to resistance training, returning after a break, managing an old injury or simply wanting to stay strong for the years ahead.

His approach is simple:
understand the person, build the plan, coach the important things and keep progressing.

UTHER HENDERSON

Personal Trainer

Uther brings an evidence-informed and welcoming approach to personal training.

His background spans strength training, powerlifting, martial arts, yoga and movement, giving him a broad toolbox for adapting training to different people and goals.

Uther’s priority is creating an environment where people feel comfortable regardless of their previous gym experience.

His aim is to make training effective, understandable and something people can genuinely keep doing.

DI MCCAULEY

Precision Health Practitioner— Mint Clinic

Di is a qualified Clinical Nutritionist and Medical Herbalist with extensive experience in clinical and performance nutrition.

Nutrition support is available separately through Mint Clinic and complements Mint Fitness’s focus on strength, fitness and healthy ageing.

The Right Help at the Right Time

Good training also means knowing when something sits outside a trainer’s scope.
Mint has relationships with other health professionals so members can access additional expertise when required.

Optimal Performance is an independent physiotherapy provider operating within Mint, providing physiotherapy and rehabilitation support.

Nutrition services are available separately through Mint Clinic.

These services are independent of Mint Fitness membership and Personal Training, but having good referral relationships makes it easier to get the right support when you need it.
